Discover your superpower
Just like the Marvel’s superheroes, everyone has a unique strength—a “superpower” that sets them apart. Often, these strengths are hidden from us because they feel natural, so we overlook them. This “strengths blindness” means we might not see our own edge – much alike the Fantastic Four’s Susan Storm – they may appear invisible.
Your superpower is a mix of:
1. Character strengths2. Capability strengths
3. An environment where these strengths thrive
Consider David Beckham.
He was never known for his tackling, heading or dribbling. His primary capability was kicking a ball with absolute precision. His key character strengths were that he would never give up and yet he could be extraordinarily calm in critical moments. That combination made him a world-class player in key moments, whether that be free kicks, corners or penalties. He had one key strength and used his amazing work ethic to turn it into a world-beating superpower.
Finding your super-strength
To discover yours, think about your top five moments at work when you felt like you were at your best. Reflect on:
1. Which skills were you using?2. What personal qualities were you tapping into?
3. What was the setting that brought out your best?
Notice any patterns? Then, try defining your strength in a simple formula:
The ability to ………………… in a………………… way, when …………………
For example, Beckham’s might be: “The ability to kick with precision in a calm way during critical moments in a game.”
Start now
Imagine you’re the best in the world at your super strength, what would this allow you to do differently?Focus on growing this area and channel your energy into it. What could you start doing today to unleash your superpower on the world?
